The most unfortunate aspect of the controversy surrounding ASIO chief Duncan Lewis is that it has given a free kick to those who want to sharpen a divisive debate about Australia’s refugee intake and Muslim immigrants generally.

And the irony is that’s just what Lewis – who formerly served as special forces commander and secretary of the defence department – seemed to be trying to avoid when he found himself in the sights of Pauline Hanson at a late-night Senate estimates hearing last week.
