The trouble with empathy

21 May 2005
Description

Does a university education make people more inclined to have an empathetic view of the world? David Burchell critically examines this view in his reappraisal of what he describes as the 'empathy wars' of the past decade, in which attitudes towards Indigenous people and refugees acted a marker of social divides. His highly critical and provocative argument is likely to challenge the assumptions of many who feeled motivated to political action by empathy.
