This strategy document sets out Australia’s future approach to aviation safety regulation and oversight for remotely piloted aircraft systems and advanced air mobility.

This report recommends that the Australian government introduce a mandatory registration regime for all remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS) weighing more than 250 grams. As part of registration requirements, RPAS operators should be required to successfully complete a basic competence test and demonstrate an understanding of the penalties for non-compliance with the rules.

As part of CASA’s review of drone regulations, this discussion paper has been released to engage the community and aviation industry on the issues and concerns which have been raised either directly with CASA, or indirectly through a number of forums.
