This paper, written from the perspective of a school, public, and academic librarian, discusses why school librarians are essential - not only for the K-12 students, but for information professionals and users of information everywhere.

The 2.5% Commitment Initiative’s goal is to increase the collective investments from academic libraries towards open common infrastructure - that is, projects that provide software or services that support open scholarship.

Although librarians initially hoped institutional repositories (IRs) would grow through researcher self-archiving, practice shows that growth is much more likely through library-directed deposit. Libraries must then find efficient ways to ingest material into their IR to ensure growth and relevance.

This article examines the movement toward sophisticated library services, which requires amending the current practice of subject librarian specialisation, which has for decades been the mainstay of academic librarianship in South Africa and many other countries in both the global south and north.
