The Māori Inquiry into Oranga Tamariki (The New Zealand Ministry for Children, also formerly known as Child, Youth and Family) was launched as a result of the continued inaction by the New Zealand Government to respond to ongoing serious issues in relation to the treatment of tamariki (children) Māori and whānau (extended family).

This submission inquires into the education of students in remote and complex environments, focusing on the needs and circumstances of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families.

Genuine partnerships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations and non Indigenous service providers are important to support an environment in which First Nations communities can work towards self-determination – the collective right of peoples to determine and control their own destiny.
