Newspapers have not fared well under the onslaught of technological innovation. Cuts in newsrooms continue around the world and go hand in hand with the rise of clickbait and social media becoming the major platforms of news delivery.

Is there any way of ensuring the high standards of journalism and the people who produce it won't become obsolete?

Amanda Wilson is former Editor of the SMH and will this week give the annual Brian Johns Lecture, presented by the Centre for Media History at Macquarie University, at the NSW State Library.
