This report offers a snapshot of Australia’s hunger problem. It shows persistent and endemic food insecurity with one in three Australian households experiencing food insecurity in the past 12 months. This year’s report highlights a significant lag between economic and household-level recovery.

Food insecurity in Australia has reached a critical point, with almost half of low-income households facing food insecurity in 2024. This report explores the current hunger situation in Australia, finding that although outcomes have improved for high and middle-income earners low-income households are worse off than ever.

This report finds that in the past year, 3.7 million Australian households experienced moderate to severe food insecurity, meaning - at the very least - they are reducing the quality, variety or desirability of their food and at worst, their eating patterns are disrupted.

This project served to test the National Food Donation Tax Incentive (NFDTI) across the food waste ecosystem to substantiate its ability to drive impactful change in the food relief sector, and deliver support to the Australian environment, population and economy.

This report is unlike any previous Foodbank Hunger Report, as it presents a picture of food insecurity in the midst of a once-in-100-year crisis. This report looks at how COVID-19, and the responses of governments, businesses and individuals to the pandemic, are affecting the ability of people to have food for themselves and their families.
