This discussion paper invites public feedback on the Model Defamation Provisions to assess whether the existing laws are meeting their policy objectives, particularly in response to the rise of online publications and technological changes since the provisions were developed.

New South Wales will lead a push to modernise defamation law across the country, in response to a review that found amendments should be considered to improve the way the justice system deals with digital media cases.

The aim of this review was to ensure that legal assistance is directed to people most in need, improving CLC service provision and to assist the NSW government in settling an approach to funding allocation.

This report proposes a number of recommendations aimed at addressing stock theft, rural trespass and illegal hunting. These include enhanced penalties for existing offences, an expansion of current regulatory requirements and significant changes to the way the NSW Police Force is currently structured to address rural crime.
