Australians lost a record amount of more than $2 billion to scams in 2021, despite government, law enforcement, and the private sector disrupting more scam activity than ever before, the ACCC’s latest Targeting Scams report reveals.

The report compiles data from Scamwatch, ReportCyber, other government agencies and 10 banks and financial intermediaries, and is based on more than 444,000 reports.

In the most comprehensive transatlantic study of its kind, this report finds that the approach of both police and policymakers to tackling cybercrime is so inadequate that it is tantamount to surrender.
