Air pollution negatively affects human health and wellbeing, accessibility of spaces and the economy. In Australia, indoor air is neither measured or monitored according to scientific best practice. This report provides a primer on the scientific evidence base and explores policy pathways to deliver healthier indoor air for everyone.

Evaluating portable air cleaner effectiveness in residential settings to reduce exposures to biomass smoke resulting from prescribed burns
In this study, researchers provided 10 homes from semi-rural regions of Victoria, Australia, with HEPA cleaners and conducted continuous monitoring of indoor and outdoor fine particulate matter (PM2.5) for 2–4 weeks during prescribed burning periods.

Mapping development and health effects of cooking with solid fuels in low-income and middle-income countries, 2000–18: a geospatial modelling study
More than 3 billion people do not have access to clean energy and primarily use solid fuels to cook. This paper urges efforts to accelerate the adoption of clean cooking fuels to improve air quality and avert child mortality associated with household air pollution.

Leaky homes need more energy to keep warm or cool. Sealing the gaps in a house, or increasing airtightness, is a common tip to reduce energy consumption, as well as make the house more comfortable to live in. However, people need a certain amount of fresh air in their homes to maintain air quality.
