This report provides a synthesis of management arrangements, catch and sustainability of sharks across Australia. This report is a commitment under the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation's International Plan of Action for the Conservation and Management of Sharks and Australia's National Plan of Action for the Conservation and Management of Sharks.

Aotearoa New Zealand’s indigenous biodiversity is unique. Millions of years of geographic isolation have resulted in a vast assemblage of plants and animals found nowhere else in the world. The decline in our country’s indigenous biodiversity on land, in freshwater and in the surrounding seas is our most insidious environmental problem.

This report concentrates on the water sources commonly used by extractive industries in the process of extracting resources lying beneath the surface–that is, underground water sources. The report examines the environmental, social and economic impacts of water extracted in this process, and the current regulatory frameworks governing water use.
