This report examines the extent and nature of deaths occurring in prison and police custody and custody-related operations in 2017–18, and compares these findings to long-term trends.

The findings of this report, in combination with an extensive body of literature, illustrate that addressing reoffending and reimprisonment requires a coordinated whole-of-government approach across justice, community and welfare services, housing and health.

The aim of this research was to identify the needs of Indigenous men and women after release from prison, so that effective community-based throughcare strategies can be developed.

Shooting deaths in police custody (including police and self-inflicted shootings) account for 30 percent of all deaths in police custody. This paper uses National Deaths in Custody Program data and coronial records to examine the circumstances of these deaths between 2006–07 and 2016–17.

This discussion paper presents strong evidence of the over-representation of people in the criminal justice system who have had brain injuries, shedding new light on the impact of such injuries and developmental differences on both victims and offenders.
