Deaths in custody in Australia 2024–25
The National Deaths in Custody Program has monitored the extent and nature of deaths occurring in prison, police custody and youth detention in Australia since 1980. This report contains detailed information on these deaths in 2024–25 and compares the findings with longer term trends. It finds there were 113 deaths in custody.

Aboriginal deaths in custody in Western Australian prisons
This article provides an overview of the nature and adequacy of culturally appropriate health services within Western Australian prisons based on coroner findings on Aboriginal deaths in custody between 2019 to 2023. The findings reported substandard quality of supervision, care and treatment. The article calls for implementation of recommendations from Australian government inquiries.

Deaths in custody in Australia 2023–24
An examination of the number and nature of deaths in prison, police custody and youth detention. The report found 104 deaths in 2023–24 (6 fewer than the previous year) and 23% of these were First Nations people. There was one death in youth detention – the first in 14 years.

In 2022–23, there were 110 deaths in custody: 70 in prison custody and 40 in police custody or custody-related operations. In total, there were 31 Indigenous deaths and 79 non-Indigenous deaths in custody.

In 2021–22, there were 106 deaths in custody: 84 in prison custody and 22 in police custody or custody-related operations. In total, there were 24 Indigenous deaths and 81 non-Indigenous deaths in custody and one death of a person whose Indigenous status was unknown.
