Understanding the value of arts and culture: the AHRC Cultural Value Project
The Project had two main objectives. The first was to identify the various components that make up cultural value. And the second was to consider and develop the methodologies and the evidence that might be used to evaluate these components of cultural value. Our cultural sectors make a crucial contribution to the regeneration, health and wellbeing of our regions, cities, towns and villages. We will work with Arts Council England, the Heritage Lottery Fund, Public Health England and other partners to develop and promote the contribution of the cultural sectors to improving health and wellbeing.

This paper reports upon very early findings from a three year ARC Discovery project exploring how online distribution is changing the environment for operating a creative micro-enterprise, with a specific focus on designer-makers. A key research question for the project is: what are the ‘self-making’ skills required to succeed in this competitive environment?
