China could be slowing faster than we think


A close look at the data tells an ambivalent story about China's growth.

With most of the developed world still struggling to deliver sustained growth, much is resting on the continued strength of emerging markets in general and of China in particular. China watchers have been debating whether China’s economy is set for a hard or soft landing, and to date the macro numbers suggest that Beijing is on track to deliver the latter. In a new International Economy Comment, Alistair Thornton, China economist for IHS Global Insight, argues that a closer look at the data tells a much more ambivalent story.
