This Heritage Note looks at the preparations and events leading up to the royal tour of Australia in 1954, including the opening of the second session of the 39th Victorian Parliament by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 25 February.
The first visit to Australia by a reigning monarch was described as a ‘high-point of royal adulation’ and one of the ‘last great pre-television events’.
