Description
Ensuring justice for victim-survivors of sexual violence requires a holistic, well-funded response that extends beyond traditional criminal justice mechanisms. While the Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) report focuses on improving police reporting and criminal justice responses, a critical gap remains: the majority of victim-survivors do not report to police.
This report presents a costed implementation strategy to address this gap by investing in alternative justice pathways, improve and expand victim-survivor support, and systemic legal reforms. It finds that for every $1 invested, Australia stands to gain at least $4 in economic and social returns.
Recommendations
- Mandating the use of alternative reports in investigations.
- Developing a victim-survivor led investigation model.
- Expanding restorative justice pathways with legal recognition.
- Reforming evidentiary requirements for prosecution.
- Establishing national consistency in alternative reporting systems.
