This paper captures insights from a workshop with young people, focusing on their views of online privacy, agency, and consent. It aims to represent their voices authentically and was submitted to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner to inform the drafting of the Children’s Online Privacy Code. The paper highlights youth perspectives as central to shaping more inclusive and responsive digital privacy policies.
The top three things this focus group wanted to tell the Privacy Commissioner about their experience of online privacy was:
1. We are aware, but not empowered.
2. Privacy violations are, sadly, normalised.
3. It’s not control, it's surrender.
