AUDIO: Fred Hilmer was for seven years head of the media company the Fairfax group, and the often difficult and combative challenges he faced in that role he's decided to talk openly about in his book, The Fairfax Experience: What the Mangagement Texts Didn't Teach Me. In this audio download Geraldine Doogue interivews Hilmer about his experiences.
It was in 1998 that he was offered the job, after a distinguished career as a former head of the McKinsey consultancy in Australia, as an academic specialising in management and as a public policy guru – but, he had no 'ink in his veins' as he admits, and no publishing experience.
