This paper is the text of Claire Woods' inaugural professorial lecture at the Hawke Institute. It explores the place of the territory of communication and writing within the current university context. Where do the theoretical and pedagogical concerns fit specifically into the University of South Australia but more generally into the academy? How have we made this territory in practice? How have we grouped knowledges to create a project in communication and writing? What and whose footprints are on this territory?
