Description
This report examines the political situation in Fiji following a Presidential announcement last Friday which abolished the constitution, assumed all governing power and revoked all judicial appointments.
Bergin examines international reactions to the coup and outlines options for an appropriate response by Australia.
Current sanctions, including travel bans, don’t appear to be working, and rewards should be considered for progress. We should try and facilitate a positive and early outcome of the political dialogue in Fiji, and ensure that a post-election Fiji will want close cooperation with Australia.
