This is the companion publication to the online report Mental health services in Australia (MHSA). The report provides an overview of data about the national response of the health and welfare system to the mental health care needs of Australians.

In 2017–18, an estimated $185.4 billion was spent on health goods and services in Australia. This equates to an average of approximately $7,485 per person and represents 10% of overall economic activity for this period.

This report focuses on trends in hospitalised (serious) fall-related injury for people aged 65 and over that occurred over the period 2007–08 to 2016–17. Information is also presented on the hospital care provided.

The National Core Maternity Indicators (NCMIs) present information on measures of clinical activity and outcomes to assist in improving the quality of maternity services in Australia by establishing baseline data for monitoring and evaluating practice change.

In Australia, and many other parts of the world, the demand for palliative care services is increasing due to the ageing of the population and the increases in the prevalence of cancer and other chronic diseases that accompany ageing.
