Executive summary This report presents the findings and recommendations of the Independent Review of the Role of Metrics in Research Assessment and Management. The review was chaired by Professor James Wilsdon, supported by an independent and multidisciplinary group of experts in scientometrics, research funding, research policy, publishing, university management and administration. This report captures an initial analysis of 6,679 impact case studies that were submitted to the 2014 Research Excellence Framework. The case studies outline changes and benefits to the economy, society, culture, policy, health, the environment and quality of life — both within the UK and overseas.
