Dipayan Ghosh

Dipayan Ghosh is a fellow across New America’s Public Interest Technology initiative and the Open Technology Institute, where he focuses on advancing consumer-oriented public policy initiatives at the intersection of privacy, security, and civil rights. Concurrently, Ghosh is an academic fellow at the Center for Information Technology at Princeton University. A computer scientist and privacy engineer by training, Ghosh joined New America from Facebook, where he was a privacy & public policy advisor. At Facebook, Ghosh helped lead strategic efforts to address public concerns around privacy and other issues in the company’s leading social media products and Internet platforms. He further helped coordinate and develop the company’s public policy positions on matters related to privacy, telecommunications policy, and algorithmic ethics.

Digital deceit: the technologies behind precision propaganda on the internet

This report argues that the central problem of disinformation corrupting American political culture is not Russian spies or a particular social media platform. The central problem is that the entire industry is built to leverage sophisticated technology to aggregate user attention and sell advertising.
