This report provides analysis of the global operations of Chinese company, Global Tone Communications Technology Co. Ltd (GTCOM), which is a subsidiary of an SOE supervised directly by China’s Central Propaganda Department. GTCOM is responsible for identifying 'risks to state security' - a concept that places the party’s political power at its core.

This publication focuses on the people who make right to information laws come to life, and who use them as tools to fight corruption.

The rise of China has helped make Australia rich, but it is also posing challenges to its values, interests, alliances and thus its identity. This paper argues that Australia's approach should include a shift towards a much better understanding of contemporary China, as well as greater engagement with Chinese individuals and groups beyond the party-state.

In 2018, Freedom in the World recorded the 13th consecutive year of decline in global freedom. The reversal has spanned a variety of countries in every region, from long-standing democracies like the United States to consolidated authoritarian regimes like China and Russia. The pattern is consistent and ominous. Democracy is in retreat.

This report argues that concerned countries should press Myanmar to protect the rights to expression and assembly, and reform laws penalizing peaceful speech, to bring them back into line with international standards.
