Reablement and ageing well initiatives offer transformative potential for older people living in Australia and accessing aged care services as they age. This briefing paper explains why reablement and ageing well strategies should be integrated with aged care reforms. Despite policy alignment, there are a range of issues impacting the widespread implementation of reablement approaches.

It finds provider performance against the Aged Care Quality Standards improved significantly towards the end of the 2023 financial year.

This report calls for more action to be taken to address Australia’s shortage of aged care workers. The solution to the shortage is multifaceted. The report provides five recommendations, including that the Federal Government introduce an essential skills visa for occupations facing severe and ongoing worker shortages in the care sector, starting with aged care.
