The Australian Academy of the Humanities led the development of this report (focused on Australia) for the World Humanities Report, an international collaborative initiative which seeks to provide insight into where and how the humanities are practiced around the globe.

This project aimed to bring together policy-makers, practitioners and researchers to better understand the individual and organisational drivers, incentives and ways of working that contribute to, or inhibit research use, and to help shift them. This report synthesises the findings that emerged from the project.

This report is an examination of the taxpayer-funded Australian Research Council (ARC) humanities grants which have been awarded to Australian universities since 2002. The report argues that universities are fixated on class, race and gender, and outlines just how much money Australians are paying for it.

This response will focus on the role of HASS education in promoting, strengthening and securing the ongoing stability of democracy and democratic values in the Australian nation.

This consultation paper is designed to identify key issues, data sources, policy opportunities and practical solutions relevant to future-proofing Australia’s humanities research workforce.
