This is the story of suicide prevention in two remote Indigenous communities - Tiwi Islands (Northern Territory) and Yarrabah (Queensland), told by the communities themselves. It is a story of community empowerment in each place and as such supports the existing work of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Suicide Prevention Evaluation Project (ATSISPEP).

The development of this strategy was funded by the Victorian Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, to support Traditional Owner rights and interests in reintroducing Cultural Fire to the landscape.

The 10-year strategy highlights the importance of empowering parents, carers, family and community, and being a culturally responsive organisation to support education and development of Aboriginal children and young people.

This background paper presents an overview of suicide in Indigenous peoples in countries where there is a dominant white society. The countries reviewed for suicide rates were Australia, Aotearoa/New Zealand, Canada, the United States of America, Greenland, and Scandinavian countries of Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Russia.

This in-brief report presents key findings from the upcoming AIHW report Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adolescent and youth health and wellbeing 2018. It brings together data for Indigenous people aged 10–24 on health and wellbeing outcomes, social and economic determinants of health, health risk factors, and health service use.
