The purpose of this working paper is to provide insight into the complexity of urbanisation and present key entry points for its better management. The paper argues that an integrated programming or a ‘systems’ approach to urban development assistance in Asia and the Pacific is critical to strengthening prosperity, reducing poverty and building disaster resilience.

This evaluation puts forward a strong case for Australia to remain engaged with Asian middle-income countries (MICs), and argues that Australia can continue to build its comparative advantage as a partner in economic and social reform.

Asian markets are substantial and growing, which provides an opportunity for diversifying Western Australian exports into Asia; for deepening relationships and growing an understanding about each other for mutual benefit. This consultation paper is the first formal step in developing the Asian engagement strategy.

This background paper was prepared by the Curtin University Sustainability Policy Institute for the Eleventh Regional EST Forum in Asia. It discusses sustainable urban design and development for Asian cities, the co-benefits of sustainable urban design, and good practices and case studies from around the world.
