The first edition of the Australian Disability Workforce Report has been released.
It is the first public report to analyse Workforce Wizard and carecareers data to reveal NDIS-related trends in the disability workforce.
It paints a picture of a sector growing rapidly and experimenting with work arrangements and recruitment approaches.
The report demonstrates the power of data from NDS benchmarking tools, such as Workforce Wizard, and the carecareers job board - initiatives which are extremely valuable for individual providers and the sector as a whole.
The first edition of the report tracks six successive quarters of workforce data, showing consistent net growth, but some increase in casual employment, and (among allied health professionals) increased use of fixed-term as opposed to ongoing employment. Indicators such as labour turnover show relative stability, with casual turnover rates much higher and less predictable than those for permanent workers.
Average working hours are recorded in Workforce Wizard as low, at 22 hours per week for support workers, and possibly reducing - suggesting poor utilisation of the existing workforce.
These and other figures show interesting variations by state, which need confirmation as the state sample sizes for Workforce Wizard users grow.
Displaying a more gender and age-balanced profile and contrasting work arrangements, the disability workforce also appears to be moving in a different direction to aged care. A recent survey revealed little crossover between the two sector workforces.
The report also explores Workforce Wizard's first 'spotlight' topic - recruitment difficulty - showing that providers are successfully recruiting in high numbers, while also experiencing challenges as they adopt more person-centred approaches.
These approaches are readily visible in carecareers job ads, which continue to attract over 500 views per ad. A slight decline in this number over time could reflect a tightening labour market, which the report will continue to track.
The Australian Disability Workforce Report will be a twice-yearly publication, with the next edition to be released in February 2018.
