High-wire act: cyber-safety and the young

Publisher
Information technology Schools Youth Australia
Description

Taking account of the opinions and internet habits of an unprecedented 33,751 young Australian internet users, this report is the result of the inquiry by the Parliament of Australia's Joint Select Committee on Cyber-Safety. The results of this consultation highlight the fact that younger generations not only hold the key to their own safety, but also that their knowledge and risk-management strategies are frequently undervalued. Young Australians have a wealth of experience with new technologies and are often more equipped to respond appropriately to online risks than is assumed. The Committee held three roundtable hearings and seven public hearings. It also held forums in schools to hear directly from young Australians. The Committee heard from Facebook, Yahoo! Ninemsn, the Australian Federal Police, the Australian Institute of Criminology, parent and teacher groups, education department representatives and leading academic experts. The 32 recommendations cover a range of issues related to Cyber-Safety and young Australian internet users. Image: anchoredbyflight / flickr
