In determining a future for South Australia, the relevance and strength of the arts and creative sector has never been more important. Besides providing enriching experiences and deep connection, the creative sector has the potential for significant growth, growing jobs and boosting the economy.
With funds from the economic strategy division on the Department of State Development, the Arts Industry Council of SA, through Brecknock Consulting, has taken the lead in exploring and developing opportunities for four sectors of the arts where we currently show national leadership.
The sectors are:
- Craft
- Screen
- Festivals
- Theatre for young audiences
AICSA chose these four sectors because they met the criteria of having local excellence, strong export growth, tourism opportunities, and critically, employment growth potential. These sectors are
emblematic for the state. They make it feel distinctive. They help animate the city. They tell local stories. They create goods and services that can be traded. As we transition from the industrial to the creative economy, new value is placed on stories, experiences, design, and original and distinctive products. The context is urbanisation, globalisation and the digital economy.
