Description
Urban living is getting denser, so how safe are you if there is a fire? Asks Fenella Kernebone on Radio Nationals By Design.
Hardly a week goes by when the news doesn’t report a fire in a house, or an apartment, and often someone being killed. It is just one year since 11 elderly people died in a nursing home fire in Sydney, many overcome by the fire itself, dying from smoke inhalation, or later in hospital. As our cities grow, as we live closer together and more and more in apartment blocks, how can design make us safer, from fire in particular? How can we design out those risks?
