Description
This statistical report presents data on sentencing practices in Victoria in the decade to 30 June 2024. The report is designed to inform the community about sentencing trends in Victoria. Data includes the number and gender of people sentenced each year, the types of offences people were sentenced for, the types of sentences people received, and the imprisonment or detention lengths and fine amounts imposed in each of the four criminal jurisdictions in Victoria: Supreme Court, County Court, Magistrates’ Court and Children’s Court.
Key findings
- Murder was the most common homicide offence sentenced in the Supreme Court.
- Sexual penetration of a child aged 12 to under 16 was the most common sexual offence in the County Court.
- Driving while suspended was the most common traffic and vehicle offence in the Magistrates’ Court.
- Unlawful assault was the most common assault offence in the Children’s Court.
