Description

This rapid review examines the housing needs of people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), whose mobility and functional changes are unpredictable and often require timely home modifications or specialist housing. It identifies key needs including accessible housing, affordable assistive technology and proximity to community. Delayed or inflexible funding emerges as a major barrier to independence.

People with MS require responsive funding, coordinated support, and future‑focused planning to maintain independence, avoid hospitalisation, and prevent early entry into residential aged care. Further research is needed to capture the unique barriers people with MS face in their local context as a precursor to developing participant-led recommendations.

Implications for Rehabilitation

  • Improved availability of housing built to accessibility and usability design standards is required.
  • Equitable, responsive funding should be available to meet the progressive needs of people with Multiple Sclerosis.
  • Expert coordination and collaboration across sectors are necessary for sustainable housing solutions.
