Visual development in childhood and common eye problems
This article provides a guide to normal visual development and an overview of assessment when visual development is non-standard. There are some indications of non-standard visual development that can be established prior to language development, but assessment is easier once language has developed. However, waiting for language to develop when there is a concern is not advised, as early identification and appropriate supports will provide better outcomes.
'Common eye problems' offers a short overview of watery eyes, conjunctivitis, squint and pseudo strabismus, infection of the eyelids, cellulitis and foreign bodies in the eyes. While children's eyes are susceptible to the same diseases as adult eyes, there are also some that are specific to paediatric cases. Children are also less likely to complain about visual problems, making the need for adult observation more acute.
