Description
The federal government is finally moving to rein in the VET FEE-HELP vocational student loan scheme that has been widely rorted and has cost the budget billions of dollars. The scheme, introduced by the Gillard Government in 2012, completely deregulated fees, allowing providers to charge whatever they want. Over the years unscrupulous providers have signed up tens of thousands of students to overpriced courses, leaving many students with large debts. Federal Education and Training Minister, Simon Birmingham, says that the new scheme will cap the size of student loans, limit the eligible courses and prohibit the use of brokers and the direct soliciting of prospective students.
