Shaping our cities: the planning strategy for the Greater Metropolitan Region of Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong and the Central Coast

1 Jan 1998
Description

Introduction

Shaping Our Cities provides the broad, updated framework for planning priorities in Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong and the Central Coast, otherwise known as the Greater Metropolitan Region.

It is a timely response to the opportunities and challenges arising out of the Regions continuing economic and population growth. Central to its aims is the way we provide for homes, work and travel to improve the built and natural environment.

Shaping Our Cities highlights some of the NSW Governments significant achievements and initiatives for each of these themes. They are backed by new sets of planning directions to guide the decisions of local government and State agencies.

These directions will be accompanied by more detailed planning policies and guidelines as well as a new Urban Improvement Program.

To reflect the Regions differences, a new series of regional planning strategies will also be progressively released. These will begin with Western Sydney, Sydney South and the Central Coast to better address the significant economic and population changes occurring in these areas.

By providing clear directions and linking metropolitan planning issues and strategies more closely with the work of State agencies, local government and communities, this approach should produce lasting benefits for the Regions residents.
