In 2018 Relationships Australia NSW established Let’s Talk Elder Mediation and Support Service. This report captures reflections on five years of learning, and makes recommendations for the future of service provision.

This Australian Human Rights Commission’s research aimed to contribute to a greater understanding of how negative perceptions of ageing and older adults may be shifted. The research shows that a brief, one-off ageism workshop can be a powerful tool in creating positive changes in attitudes and behaviours towards older people.

This submission contends that Australia is the only liberal democracy in the world with no national human rights protection mechanism. The submission supports the introduction of a federal Human Rights Act for Australia and provides recommendations and case studies that specifically support an Act to protect older people.

These reports share key lessons for service providers delivering elder abuse services, advocate for the expansion of integrated elder abuse services, and draw attention to systemic gaps that must be addressed in order for elder abuse to be resolved.

This research was commissioned by the Federation of nine Councils on the Ageing (COTA) across Australia – including all eight COTA state and territory organisations and COTA Australia – to understand the views, life experiences and needs of Australians aged 50+.
