This study evaluated the impact of the first phase of the Mandatory Alcohol Interlock Program (MAIP), introduced in NSW in February 2015, on repeat drink-driving, driving while disqualified, traffic infringements and crash outcomes.

Through this research, the Automobile Association Research Foundation (AARF) wants to understand how many drink drivers are appearing before the courts that are eligible for an interlock sentence and what proportion of those are being given such a sentence.

This report found evidence which suggests that a well-designed, specialist response to repeat drink driving, would provide a promising alternative to traditional sentencing approaches.

This article examines Australia's idiosyncratic approach to the criminalisation of drug driving, highlighting its weak correlation with the important road safety objective of deterring substance-impaired driving, and the risks of both over- and under-criminalisation that it creates.
