The Aboriginal Health Council of Western Australia (AHCWA) provided a submission to the WA Department of Health’s (DOH) Discussion Paper on Managing Housing Health Risks in WA.

Using data from the 2016 Census of Population and Housing, this paper reflects the extent of house crowding among two cultural groups: Australia’s Indigenous population and Australia’s Lebanese population, who are both disadvantaged in socio- economic terms, but with differing cultural needs.

This paper aims to identify the gap between empirical research in comparison with indigenous ways of knowing, and the sharing of knowledge, regarding culturally appropriate housing design for Indigenous peoples in Australia.

This study suggests that developing culturally appropriate responses to Indigenous domestic and family violence (DFV) and improving integration between housing and DFV and child protection services should reduce the rates of Indigenous women's injury and death, as well as rates of Indigenous children's out-of-home care.
