This overview report summarises the findings of five case studies on the likely impact of game changing technologies on production and employment in the manufacturing sector in Europe up to 2025: advanced industrial robotics; industrial internet of things; additive manufacturing; electric vehicles; and industrial biotechnology.

This study provides insights into the actions and strategies of public and private stakeholders in Advanced Industrial Robotics (AIR). Trade unions, but also some politicians and governments, express some degree of reluctance to the ever-increasing use of AIR and automation in general.

In the past, manufacturing-led development typically delivered both productivity gains and job creation for unskilled labor. Underpinning the productivity benefits was the sector’s tradability in international markets, which not only reinforced scale economies and technology diffusion, but importantly, also provided greater opportunities to access demand beyond the domestic market and increased competition.
