The Western Australian resources industry is committed to regularly reviewing its working hour arrangements and in doing so is able to demonstrate a responsible, informed and proactive approach in providing a safe workplace for all employees.
As a result of closely monitoring working hours and collecting annual data since 2003, the industry has a comprehensive understanding of the working hours issue and is able to promote best practice through benchmarking the parameters around working arrangements.
This includes consideration of types of rosters, shift lengths, annual leave, break allocation and work journey arrangements that are used in the sector. In 2006, the CME gathered working hour data from approximately 100 mining and petroleum sites across Western Australia.
The trend of decreased working hours over the years emphasises industry’s commitment to utilising risk management to continuously improve health safety and related practices.
