This strategy aims to support all mothers, fathers/partners and babies in Australia by providing support for mothers to breastfeed their infants. As carers, mothers and fathers/partners make decisions (including decisions about infant and young child feeding) that can influence short- and long-term health outcomes for themselves and their children.

The strategy provides a framework for integrated, coordinated action to shape and inform Commonwealth, state, territory and local government policies and programs as they support mothers, fathers/partners and their babies throughout their breastfeeding journeys. It sets out a vision, objectives, principles, priority areas and action areas to provide a supportive and enabling environment for breastfeeding.

The strategy is designed to be used as a resource across governments at all levels, policymakers, stakeholder organisations, the public and private health sectors, industry, researchers and academics, families and communities as a tool to protect, promote and support breastfeeding. The strategy provides guidance on evidence-based approaches to protect, promote, support and monitor breastfeeding.
