Report
Description
This report details the findings of a Review of Victoria Police use of ‘stop and search’ powers associated with the control of weapons.
The OPI review found little evidence to suggest that concerns have been realised relating to arbitrary use of powers or the targeting of particular groups.
It also found that Victoria Police is not able to meet the legislative reporting requirements due to inadequate data collection and retrieval mechanisms.
The report also argues that in order to increase compliance, Victoria Police should also address the flaws in statistical reporting to enable an automatic report to be generated which meets the legislative requirements for reporting to the Minister.
