The objective of the audit was to assess the effectiveness of ASIO’s arrangements for providing timely and soundly based security assessments of individuals to client agencies.
The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) was established in 1949 as Australia’s national security intelligence service. The agency operates under the direction of the Director‐General of Security who is accountable to the Attorney‐General.
ASIO’s role is to identify and investigate threats to security, wherever they arise, and to provide advice to protect Australia, its people and its interests. 1 ASIO’s roles and responsibilities are set out in the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation Act 1979 (the ASIO Act).
