Description

In the past 20 years, Australian governments have drafted numerous strategy frameworks to tackle obesity, with another National Obesity Strategy launched on World Obesity Day March 2022. Since then, little has been done to implement this strategy. This report shows there has been no lasting comprehensive action that has flowed from previous and current strategies. This report outlines an agreed suite of evidence-based obesity related interventions that can be immediately implemented within existing national policy frameworks, including:

  • Strengthening Medicare reform
  • The National Obesity Strategy 2022-2032
  • National Preventive Health Strategy 2021–2030
  • Measuring What Matters national wellbeing framework.

Action to reduce obesity risks, create healthier environments and better support people to improve their health, have many benefits relating to chronic disease prevention, mental health, productivity, and sustainability, and are in line with other Government strategies and initiatives, including the ongoing Parliamentary Inquiry into Diabetes.
