Federal crime threat picture 2024
This high-level snapshot looks at the trends and shifting landscape of criminal and security threats in Australia. It highlights the increasingly complex and interconnected nature of threats shaped by rapid technological advancement, geopolitical instability, and climate change, and outlines the Australian Federal Police's (AFP) strategic priorities for addressing these challenges.
The paper observes that the AFP's operating environment is expected to become increasingly complex over the coming years as a result of these instabilities and note the growing importance of building law enforcement capacity and capability with international intelligence and law enforcement partners, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region.
The document outlines three core strategic priorities for the AFP:
- Protection of life, including from exploitation, terrorism and violent extremism, and online threats.
- Protection of Australia’s collective economic and societal interests from criminal threats by deterring malicious actors and making Australia a hostile environment for criminals to operate in.
- Protection of the Commonwealth by combatting foreign interference and espionage, protecting office holders, dignitaries, Australia's borders and critical infrastructure.
