Description

This report summarises the proceedings and outcomes of an event convened to discuss key issues, share knowledge, and formulate collective calls to action to support ageing Stolen Generations survivors and their families. The report highlights the urgent need for adequate funding for Stolen Generations Organisations (SGOs), the continuation of truth-telling initiatives, and the development of culturally safe aged care services for survivors.

Over three days the group connected and created collective knowledge on the work being done across Australia to support ageing Stolen Generations survivors and their families. The event provided a platform for SGOs to share their experiences, best practices, and challenges, and to collectively identify priorities for future action.

Recommendations

  1. SGOs should be provided with adequate and sustainable funding, enabling them to continue providing vital services and support to survivors, their families, and communities.
  2. Truth-telling processes, initiated by the Stolen Generations and the Bringing Them Home report, must continue until all Australians know the truth and reparations have been made.
  3. Acknowledge the collective and intergenerational nature of healing and place young people at the centre of all initiatives.
  4. Provide consistent and urgent redress to all survivors as part of a comprehensive reparations package that includes survivor, family, and community healing programs as well as cultural restitution.
  5. Implement funding and policies that support culturally safe and survivor-led aged/elder care.
  6. All institutions, organisations, and individuals, both public and private, holding records relating to the forced removal of Stolen Generations should provide prioritised and open access to their collections.
  7. Provide SGOs with the necessary training and resources to manage records and collections related to survivors.
  8. Support SGO-driven research to further their work and preserve the histories they hold.
