The handbook offers public servants practical guidance and examples to enhance their writing. Its objective is to ensure communications from and within the Australian Public Service (APS) are clear, purposeful and consistent. 

Developed by the team behind the Australian Government Style Manual and part of reform program to build capability in the APS, the handbook is a selection of short-format style manual guidance with plenty of examples and tips, covering the style elements that people use most often in government writing. The manual comprises:

• Section 1: Write for your readers
• Section 2: Write so your meaning is clear
• Afterword: Review your writing effectively.

Each section has a central theme linking the articles within it and editor’s tips follow the articles.
